A new life, a world away from home.

Connie Sanders makes the brave decision to embark on an adventure to the Arctic, where she'll work as a nurse. Surprised by the different types of people and ways of living she finds there, Connie finds herself on opposing ends with Mrs Brooks, the reverend's wife, and Paul, the government administrator. Fortunately, she makes good friendships with Elizabeth, who she comes to think of as her Arctic mother, and Daisy, a woman she connects with instantly.

The Inuit people are sceptical of western medicine, but Connie manages to win them over and becomes a legend in the community. When rumours about her personal life spread, all her hard work is put to the test. Find out how Connie evolves from a timid adventurer into a confident woman and skilled nurse.

A story inspired by real diaries

From Manchester To The Arctic is based on the author's wife's diaries, from her own experiences of taking up a similar role earlier in life. Connie's story is fictional, but the diaries lend it an authentic feel, following a full year in the Arctic as Connie learns the ways of the Inuit people around her, and finds a community, and a version of herself, she never expected.

About the author

Sheena Billett

Sheena has long been fascinated by the everyday and the knowledge that everyone has a story, no matter how unremarkable they might seem. The theme that connects all of her writing is that of journeying through life. This might be a literal journey, as in From Manchester To The Arctic, or an emotional journey where characters are sometimes pushed out of their comfort zones through having to deal with a crisis or unforeseen event.

Sometimes the journey results in growth and exciting new horizons, but in other cases, there are those who refuse to take any steps along the journey, and consequently remain stunted, often damaging the people around them as a result.

Sheena lives with her wife in Nottinghamshire.
